Net Run Rate Calculator

In a big event like World Cup, IPL or any multi-nation tour when two (or) more teams get tied with same number of points then net run-rate is used as tie-breaker to rank those team in the table. NRR has been significant factor in a big tournament like IPL as in the past if we see many teams have been eliminated from IPL Playoffs race despite having same number of points as 4th placed team.

As we all know Run Rate of a team in any match is calculated as the number of runs scored divided by number of overs faced. So net run rate at end of one game is just the difference of team 1’s run-rate subtracted from team 2’s run-rate.

In this article, we will have a look at examples of a few scenarios to help understand how it is done mathematically as the tournament progresses for a team.

Run Rate = (Total Runs Scored) / (Total Overs faced)

Net Run Rate = (Total Runs scored by team in tournament)/(Total overs faced by team) – (Total runs scored by opponent team in tournament)/(Total overs faced by the opponent team)

Note:- If a team gets all-out then it will be counted as full 20 overs faced. In general for team batting first always 20 overs will be counted unless match gets reduced to lesser overs because of rain or other unavoidable scenario.

In IPL 2022, let’s take game number 1 between CSK and KKR.

CSK batting first smashed 131/5 in 20 overs and KKR scored 133/4 in reply from 18.3 overs.
Now, NRR of CSK after Game 1 will be [(131)/20] – [(133)/18(3/6)] = 6.55 – 7.189 = -0.639.

Here, we need to note that 18.3 is taken as 18 (3/6) in mixed fractions which will be 18.5 and not 18.3. We should always take the value in mixed fractions when team chases a target in decimal value because there will be six balls only in an over while this normal decimal systems cannot be used as they take 1/10th original value instead of taking 1/6th off the value.

If decimal systems is confusing, we can use (no. of runs scored by team)/(no. of balls faced by team)*6 as our formula overall.

Now, CSK played their next match against LSG. In that game, CSK smashed 210/7 but LSG chased down 211 runs in 19.3 overs.

CSK scores: 131 & 210 from 40 overs
Opposition scores: 133 & 211 from 18.3 & 19.3 overs respectively

NRR of CSK after their two games will be [(131+210)/40] – [(133+211)/38] = 8.525 – 9.0526 = -0.5276

Similarly, net-run rate will be calculated as [(Total runs scored by team in tournament)/(Total overs faced by team in tournament)] – [(Total runs scored by opposition in tournament)/(Total overs faced by opposition in tournament)].

If we have a closer look at this IPL 2022 points table, LSG unfortunately lost their place in top 2 spot despite having same number of points as RR while RCB might miss out from Playoffs race despite having same number of points as DC.

We will have a look at how tournament went for these 4 teams and why NRR got hit for LSG and RCB.

1. Comparison between RR & LSG’s NRR

RR’s scores in IPL 2022: 210, 193, 169, 165, 155, 217, 222, 144, 158, 152, 190 (19.4), 160, 178 & 151(19.4) – Addition of all these scores results in 2464 from 1676 balls.

Opposition team scores when they played against RR in IPL 2022: 149, 170, 173 (19.1), 162, 192, 210, 207, 115, 161 (19.2), 158 (19.1), 189, 161 (18.1), 154 & 150 – Addition of all these scores results in 2351 runs from 1655 balls.

Note:- Overs in bracket have been mentioned only if team has played less than 20 overs

Rajasthan Royals NRR will be [(2464)/(1676)]*6 – [(2351)/(1655)]*6 = 8.82100 – 8.52326 = 0.297737

LSG’s scores in IPL 2022: 158, 211 (19.3), 169, 155 (19.4), 162, 199, 163, 168, 153, 195, 176, 82, 154 & 210 – Addition of all these scores results in 2355 from 1675 balls.

Opposition team scores when they played against LSG in IPL 2022: 161 (19.4), 210, 157, 149, 165, 181, 181, 132, 133, 189, 101, 144, 178, 208 – Addition of all these scores results in 2289 from 1678 balls.

Note:- Overs in bracket have been mentioned only if team has played less than 20 overs.

Lucknow Super Giants NRR will be [(2355)/(1675)]*6 – [(2289)/(1678)]*6 = 8.43582 – 8.184743 = 0.251077

Now, we can see LSG’s NRR being lesser than RR’s NRR while doing this mathematical calculation. LSG losing to GT by a margin of 62 runs has considerably reduced their NRR and just 2-run win in their recent match against KKR didn’t help their cause to boost the NRR as well.

2. Comparison between DC & RCB’s NRR

DC’s scores in IPL 2022: 179 (18.2), 157, 149, 215, 173, 119 (10.3), 207, 150 (19), 189, 207, 117, 161 (18.1), 159 – Addition of all these scores results in 2182 from 1476 balls.

Opposition team scores when they played against DC in IPL 2022: 177, 171, 155 (19.4), 171, 189, 115, 222, 146, 195, 186, 208, 160, 142 – Addition of all these scores results in 2237 from 1558 balls.

Note:- Overs in bracket have been mentioned only if team has played less than 20 overs.

Delhi Capitals NRR will be [(2182)/(1476)]*6 – [(2237)/(1558)]*6 = 8.869918 – 8.614890 = 0.255028

Delhi still have 1 more game against Mumbai and for RCB to qualify, the only way is Mumbai defeating Delhi in their last game of league stage.

RCB’s scores in IPL 2022: 205, 132 (19.2), 173 (19.1), 152 (18.3), 193, 189, 181, 68, 115, 170, 173, 192, 155, 170 (18.4) – Addition of all these scores results in 2268 from 1654 balls.

Opposition team scores when they played against RCB in IPL 2022: 208 (19), 128, 169, 151, 216, 173, 163, 72 (8), 144, 174 (19.3), 160, 125, 209, 168 – Addition of all these scores results in 2260 from 1599 balls.

Note:- Overs in bracket have been mentioned only if team has played less than 20 overs.

Royal Challengers Bangalore NRR will be [(2268)/(1654)]*6 – [(2260)/(1599)]*6 = 8.227327 – 8.480300 = -0.252973

Here if we see, RCB getting all-out for 68 and allowing SRH to chase down the total inside 8 overs has hurt them big in their net run-rate. Also, in the recent game against PBKS, they lost by a considerable margin of 54 runs.

DC despite a 91-run loss to CSK has won a game against PBKS by chasing 116 in 10.3 overs and that has helped their NRR to boost.
