Manchester United’s defeat to Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 game of the UEFA champions league has drawn a lot of flak and criticism. From the fans to former players, everyone looks highly disappointed with the Red Devils’ performance against Madrid on Tuesday night. The side could not produce even a single goal against a better positioned opponent in the pre-quarters to get knocked out of the tournament.

With this loss to Madrid, United’s hope to end a title drought has been put to an end for this season. Their performance has not improved even after their previous manager was sacked. Ralf Rangnick has failed to improve overall performance as well as individual performances from players and this has not gone well with club legend Paul Scholes.

Getting a proper coach for this team is a massive thing: Scholes

Scholes has openly criticized the Man United manager for failing to get the best out of a good team. He also questioned the German’s appointment as Red Devils’ manager. “How (Ralf Rangnick) was he chosen to be the manager of this club, I don’t know. Getting a proper coach for this team is a massive thing.  There is some real talent in this squad,” he said as quoted by BT Sports.

“The very first thing this club needs to do to get anywhere near winning the league again is getting in a proper coach who works for this team,” added Scholes.

The former United star also cited the example of Ragnick’s counterpart on Tuesday, Diego Simeone and said that if the latter was with United, they would have made it through to the quarters of the Champions League. He said, “If Diego Simeone was managing them, United would have gone through.”

No change of fortunes for United even with new manager

Manchester United’s performance in the past has been nothing more than abysmal. The Red Devils faced a string of defeats leading to the sacking of then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Rangnick was then appointed as the new manager on an interim basis. But with the change of manager, there was no change in the fortunes of the club. United have failed to win a Champions League title in more than a decade now and after Tuesday night, the disappointing streak continues with their elimination.

Interestingly, Scholes also reckoned that the worse is yet to come for the English club under Rangnick. “We have had a lot of pain and I think there is more to come until we get back to where we want to be,” the 47-year-old concluded.
