MS Dhoni is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in Indian cricket and as he is approaching the end of his career, fans just keep hoping that he will play one more season of IPL. In 2020, when Chennai Super Kings had a disastrous campaign, people wondered if it was the end of a great era. However, the famous words "Definitely Not" raised the hopes for everyone that there was still fuel left in the tank.

Little did many know that MSD won't just return for CSK in IPL 2021 but also lead them to a historic 4th title in UAE. There were speculations that he might announce his retirement in the post-match presentation but when asked (by Harsha Bhogle) if he was proud to leave a legacy behind, MSD said, "Still I haven't left behind," possibly suggesting that he might play one more season in the tournament.

Since then, there have been a lot of doubts over the future of MSD in IPL and the 40-year-old has still not decided if he will play the upcoming season or not. In an event organized by India Cements and Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M K Stalin to celebrate CSK's triumph in UAE, Thala was presented with a beautiful painting of him.

This is where MSD also opened up on his future as he admitted that there is still some time left before he takes the final call on playing IPL 2022 or now. "I haven't thought about it yet, we've still so many months left. We're in November, and IPL is in April," Dhoni said.

Will Chennai Super Kings release MS Dhoni?

It must be noted that all the current 8 franchises have to submit the list of players they wish to retain for next season, by the end of this month. With MSD yet to decide on his future, there is a likely possibility that Chennai Super Kings might have to release him. However, if the 40-year-old decides to participate in IPL 2022, he will have to give his name for the mega auctions where CSK will have to fight it out with 9 other franchises to secure the services of Dhoni.
