As a vintage MS Dhoni capped off an incredible chase against Mumbai Indians, the cricketing world rose up to praise the former India captain. Chennai Super Kings needed 17 runs in the final over but the Yellow Army still had hope as Thala Dhoni was still on the crease.
The 41-year-old smashed Jaydev Unadkat for 2 fours and 1 six as he finished the game with 28 from 13 balls. Dhoni started his carnage with a six down the ground, followed by a boundary. Then he took a couple and smashed a four on the last ball to end things in spectacular fashion.
His former teammate and current Delhi Capitals assistant coach Shane Watson reacted to this Dhoni special on the Grade Cricketer Podcast. He also talked about how Captain Cool decoded Unadkat’s plan and finished off the game.
He said, “It was just a very special-special game again. It went super deep as it always does really with Dhoni but he just looks so calm. I wouldn’t be his calm you could see Pretorious who was batting with him at the time he nearly ran himself out a couple of times because he was on the edge of his seat.
But just the calmness that MS has got and him knowing Unadkat as well, he can sort of get it a little bit wrong a time under pressure, but he actually bowled a couple of good balls. But Dhoni was just there’s one shot in particular that he hit the six the one that he hit straight down the ground that was proper Dhoni of old.”
You know you don’t lose the skill: Watson
“The power that he had under the ball like in his back leg just exploded the ball dead straight which I hadn’t seen for like the last couple of years. But like anything it’s for him you know you don’t lose the skill and as soon as that like situation the game came in you could see his mind just narrowly focus on just watching the ball and just loading up. Even that last ball Unadkat executes it actually really well, leg-stump yorker and Dhoni just found the gap as he was trying to place it just behind square,” Watson continued.
“But it’s just the brilliance of Dhoni, that was something very special to watch as again it just reminds you of what Dhoni’s been able to do throughout his whole career just being able to just stay so calm and cool. You know it’s really tight, it’s a big game against MI and both CSK and MI not playing well this season so far. I was shouting at the TV from my bed when Dhoni scored the winning run last night,” Watto revealed.
