While Kylian Mbappe and Luka Modric could have been teammates at Real Madrid next season, Mbappe chose to continue with the Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) despite reportedly verbally agreeing to the contract offered by the Los Blancos. And, in a recent development, when Modric was asked about his contract situation at the Santiago Bernabéu, he couldn't stop himself from taking a sly dig at the PSG star.

Answering a question from Spanish media about his contract situation, he cheekily remarked that he won't do a Mbappe. However, he also hoped that the club also does not go back on its promise.

"I haven't renewed yet, but I'm not going to do an Mbappe. I hope the club doesn't do it to me!" Modric told Spanish radio program COPE.

"We have a good relationship. I have said many times that I want to finish my career here," he added.

It has been reported that Real even had replica jerseys with Mbappe's name on the back printed and ready for sale but a last-minute U-turn from the 23-year-old footballing sensation played spoilsport.

Mbappe's decision to not join the Spanish giants is more of a blow to the team because their other key transfer target as far as the attacking options are concerned was Erling Haaland whose transfer to Manchester City has been confirmed by the English league winners.

As far as Modric is concerned, his contract with Real Madrid is set to expire this year and the star midfielder could be of great interest to many clubs in Europe but he has promised the club that he will stay with them.

When he was asked further if Mbappe's decision came as a shock to him he denied it by saying that he did not have prior knowledge.

"We had no expectations. There was a lot of talk about this for a year, but we didn't know anything; if it was going to happen or not, and that is why we have to close that topic and not talk about it anymore," he stated.

For now, though, Modric's prime focus would be on helping his side to win UEFA Champions League when they take on Liverpool in this season's finale at the Stade de France on May 28 (May 29 IST).
