After winning the toss, New Zealand opted to field first looking at the weather conditions. The Indian openers got off to a good start. However, they failed to convert it to a big partnership and both were dismissed in quick succession. Meanwhile, Pujara who was looking solid with the bat was dismissed by a beautiful delivery from Trent Boult.
