India name 215 athlete contingent for Commonwealth Games 2022

Along with the players, the overall contingent count is 322, which includes 72 team officials, 26 extra officials, nine contingent staff, and three general managers.

India have announced a 215 athlete contingent for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be played from 28 July to 8 August. The squad comprises players of 108 men and 107 women from 16 different disciplines. Along with the players, the overall contingent count is 322, which includes 72 team officials, 26 extra officials, nine contingent staff, and three general managers.

In this edition, the game of cricket will also make a comeback after 1998 with the participation of women’s teams. The games like athletics and hockey, with 36 entries each is the biggest contingent.

A warm send-off ceremony was organized, which marked the presence of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who was a chief guest. Tokyo 2020 Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Lovlina Borgohain were the attendees as well. The Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, and talented sprinters Dutee Chand and Hima Das were the other prominent athletes.

Thakur reckoned that the current squad has all the abilities to make India proud on a global stage. He wished the best to all the athletes and gave them assurance to be at their side in victories or defeats.

“This Indian CWG squad is definitely our best and strongest ever and I am confident that all our athletes will make India proud on a global stage yet again, the number of medals they win notwithstanding. We are all proud of them and the whole country will be behind them, whether in victory or in defeat. We wish you all the very best,” said Thakur.

The general secretary of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Rajeev Mehta seemed confident of India’s strong performance in the tournament. He thanked the Ministry of Sports to provide all the facilities to the athletes so that they can prepare themselves well.

“We are confident of a strong performance by the squad. Their training and preparations have been top class and the Government of India and the Ministry of Sports have left no stone unturned to ensure that we put our best foot forward for the Birmingham CWG. I humbly express my gratitude towards them and wish all our athletes, coaches, and support staff a hugely successful Games,” said Mehta.

IOA has announced the Rs. 20 lakh cash prize for Gold medal winners, while Rs 10 lakh and Rs 7.5 lakh will be awarded to the Silver and Bronze medalists, respectively.
