The build-up to this T20I series was immense but cricket fans and Indian fans in particular, did not savor the cricketing action of the 1st T20I. India were beaten comprehensively by a menacing English side and they have to go back to the drawing board. All the matches take place in Ahmedabad and we can expect the pitches to get a tad slower with the progression of time. An exciting contest is on the cards and it is important to not discount India out of the contest.
India will be disappointed with their rustiness and inability to counter-attack the English side. A couple of early wickets shook the home team and there was application showed only by Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Iyer smashed his way to a fluent 67 off 48 deliveries and that was the highlight of Team India’s batting. If not for this innings, India would have been reduced to an even lesser total. Shardul Thakur is a fantastic choice for his all-round abilities, even though he was out for a golden duck. He had middled the ball well but was unfortunate that there was a fielder at deep mid-wicket. Chahal took a wicket and surpassed Jasprit Bumrah to be India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is.
England were exceptional in all the departments of the game. Their bowling was really disciplined and they hit consistent lines and lengths. The fact that they just conceded 2 extras in the entire 20 overs is a testament to this statement. Eoin Morgan’s canny captaincy too deserves a lot of plaudits. Batting wise, Jason Roy is a hot-pick. He looked in superlative form and scored 49 runs. Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan are exceptional picks in the bowling department.
