Indian men's hockey team's dramatic winning run at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games came to an end on Tuesday after they went down 2-5 against World number 2 and reigning World Champions Belgium in the semifinals. While the defeat has shattered India's chances of clinching a gold medal in the sport, they can still go on to win the bronze medal if they beat Germany on Thursday.

For Belgium, Alexander Hendrickx (19th, 49th, 53rd minutes), the tournament’s highest goal-getter, scored a hat-trick while Loick Luypaert and John-John Dohmen also chipped in with a goal to allow the 2016 silver-medallists their second successive entry into the final of the Olympics. For India, Mandeep Singh and Harmanpreet Singh scored but their defence was put under the test in the second half with repeated attacks from the Belgium forwards and they crumbled under pressure.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had tweeted to announce that he was watching the match, said that winning and losing are part of the sport but he was proud of the team and their efforts. The campaign is far from being over for the men's team though as India next takes on Germany for bronze medal. If at all, the men's team manages to clinch the bronze, it will be the first medal for them in the Summer Games since 1980.
