There was little that was surprising about the manner in which Team India registered a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the opening ODI of the three-match series on Sunday. They were dominant, confident, fearless and were never quite challenged by the Sri Lankans as they finished the 263-run chase with over 13 overs remaining. However, Sri Lanka would have to look at the positives and make a rather quick turnaround as the two teams meet for the second ODI at the same venue on Tuesday. Team India won't be changing the way they go about it but the hosts would look to put up a stronger show and make the contest enriching.

India's performance was a statement. A statement to those who felt that this was a second-string India side and to those who doubted this team's ability. For those who had followed the players, though, it did not seem anything out of the blue. The boys have been rearing to go for a while now and such is the quality of the Indian side that several of these including Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who made their debuts together on Sunday, have failed to make it to the XI prior to this. On the other hand, Sri Lanka have been struggling with form and consistency and their concerns further aggravated in the first ODI. However, they will have some positives to look at since most of their batters got starts. At the core of a well-paced ODI innings though, is the ability for someone in the top half of the order to play long innings and if they can produce that from somewhere, suddenly the bowling too could get that confidence into their game with more runs in the bank. Purely on paper though and on current form, India look favourites again.
