KKR after winning the toss opted to bowl first on the tricky and turning Chepauk pitch. MI were going good until the halfway stage of the game with the help of Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma's 76-run partnership but post that, they lost the momentum and were reduced to a total of just 152 runs. Andre Russell came in to bowl the death overs and picked a 5-wicket haul. Russell also registered the best ever bowling figure for a KKR bowler in IPL.

KKR openers batted superbly and it looked like KKR would win the game convincingly with the steady opening partnership from Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana. However, in the last five overs, Rohit Sharma's brilliant tactical moves helped Mumbai come out on top. KKR had 6 wickets in the hand and needed only 31 runs from the last 5 overs to win the game but unfortunately ended up choking the match in very poor fashion.
