Prediction of the Game

So much drama already seems to have happened and yet it is only the second week of the two-month long Indian Premier League (IPL). Taking the daily dose of entertainment for the fans ahead will be the contest between Chennai and Punjab on Sunday.

This has been the only season where Chennai have lost their first two matches. However, it would be too early to write them off, given the experience that they possess and their proven ability to bounce back.

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, have tasted a win in their first game while losing their second. While they defeated Bangalore in their season opener, they faced a big defeat at the hands of Kolkata.

Prior to the Chennai vs Punjab contest, here is a stat-based prediction of what could transpire in the match. However, so fickle is the nature of this tournament that all of it could hold little relevance when the actual action begins.

1. Toss Prediction

Chennai have won just one of the last five tosses. In contrast, Punjab have won three. Based purely on that stat, Punjab are predicted to win this toss as new Chennai skipper Ravindra Jadeja hasn't anything to show against his name yet as far as the toss is concerned.

2. Win Possibility

Chennai have been the dominant team in the overall head-to-head record between these two sides. The two sides have met each other 25 times in IPL and those in Yellow have won 15 of these games, Punjab have tasted win in the other 10 matches, which includes a Super Over victory. Even in the last four meetings of these two teams, Chennai have won three games.

3. Team of the Day

With a better head-to-head record overall as well as in recent fixtures coupled with their track record of a strong comeback after a few defeats makes Chennai the pick for the Team of the Day.

4. Powerplay Score

The average powerplay score at Brabourne Stadium, the venue for this game, is 52.6. In IPL 2022, the average powerplay score here has increased to 56.8. Given the impressive top-order batters in both sides, both Chennai and Punjab are likely to score above 45 inside the first six overs.

5. Average first innings and second innings scores

The average first innings score at this venue is 182.4. In IPL 2022 though, the average first innings score has been clocked at 193.5. The average second innings score at this venue in IPL 2022 has been 195 and a team batting first is yet to taste a win.
