Wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock played a courageous 80 off 52 balls as Lucknow Super Giants beat Delhi Capitals by six wickets for their third successive win on their debut IPL season on Thursday. After an early mini-collapse in the second innings, de Kock held the fort for Lucknow and drove the game to victory before Krunal Pandya. Ayush Badoni finished the proceeding and ensured a third straight win.

Earlier, Delhi Capitals, who were invited to bat first, lost their way after opener Prithvi Shaw’s sizzling knock of 61 off 34, followed by run-a-ball innings from Rishabh Pant (39 off 36) and Sarfaraz Khan (36 off 28) to end at 149 for 3 in 20 overs. The South Africa wicketkeeper-batter unleashed himself on pacer Anrich Nortje who was playing his first game since November. Nortje was smashed for three fours and a six by de Kock in an over leaking 19 runs. After de Kock put his side on the cusp of victory with his second 50-plus score of the tournament, Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda made an honest attempt but had a tough time finding runs. Lucknow eventually managed to cross the winning mark with the help of young prodigy Ayush Badoni’s match-winning six.

The 15th match of the season had quality cricket to watch from both ends, due to which it became a nail-biting thriller till the end. Let’s take a look at a few highlights of the game.

1. Prithvi Shaw’s solid start for DC

Shaw struggled to score big in the tournament despite middling the bowl well. His first two scores, 38 and 10, didn’t speak volumes of his talent. He was getting out on reckless shots, which prompted head coach Ricky Ponting to admit that he would have a word with him. However, all the criticism ended as Shaw played a sizzling 61-run knock in 34 balls on the surface, where others struggled heavily.

2. Nortje’s expensive return

Pat Cummins’ return was exceptional and rare in a lot of manners. While Nortje’s return to IPL was a forgettable and unlikely one. He conceded 35 runs in his 2.2 overs he got to bowl before he bowled two no-balls in the game and was officially not allowed to bowl further. He first came to bowl the fifth over in the second innings, and least to say, that was not the kind of return anyone was expecting. De Kock caused a massive tremor in the opponent’s camp as he studded the scorecard with three boundaries and one six in the over. 4 4 4 0 6 1, read the fifth over.

De Kock’s assault on Nortje didn’t end there, but he hit him for a six on the very first ball of the 14th over. Nortje conceded 14 runs in his second over, while his third over could not be completed by him as he bowled the second no-ball of the match and was officially taken off the attack.

A 75-run stand between Rishabh Pant and Sarfaraz Khan

After a solid start from Shaw, DC struggled to find some momentum in the game, but skipper Pant (39 off 36) and middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan (36 off 28) played steady innings to rescue their side from a batting collapse. Both the players added 75 runs together and managed to take the total to 149-3 in 20 overs.

Quinton de Kock’s yet another half-century

Lucknow had a solid start to their run chase as both the openers, KL Rahul and de Kock, added 73 runs on board for the first wicket. Even after Rahul got dismissed, de Kock played a mature knock and ensured that his side stayed in the game. He scored 80 off just 52 balls, which includes two sixes and nine boundaries.

Ayush Badoni’s last match-winning six

Badoni is the find of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League. As skipper Rahul rates him a 360-degree player, Badoni has given enough evidence to provide Rahul’s point, and his confidence in crucial junctures makes him a valuable player. Badoni was again at his best as he came, went for maximum, finished things in style and celebrated. This process has become a trademark of Badoni as he keeps playing match-winning knocks for his side as the tournament progresses.
