Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has lauded BCCI's decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as the new skipper for the white ball format, both ODI and T20Is. The Indian cricket management also announced that Virat Kohli will continue to lead the team for the longest format in cricket which is the Tests.

It must be noted that Virat Kohli, who already stepped down as India's T20I leader, was given a period of 48 hours (2 days) to voluntarily forgo his leadership role but he did not respond to it and as a result, the leadership role was handed over to Rohit Sharma. The decision left fans, ex-cricketers, commentators divided on the captaincy decision.

These crucial management decisions came to light when the squad for the upcoming South Africa Tour was announced. Days after an emphatic victory against New Zealand by 372 runs in the 2nd Test at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the All-India Senior Selection Committee officials announced the South Africa Tour details. Team India are set to play 3 Test matches against South Africa, starting from 26th December 2021. The committee clarified that the Test series will form a part of the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Indian cricket is in very safe hands: Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir has also shared his opinion on the change in captaincy. He appreciated Rohit Sharma while saying that, "I think it's good for Indian cricket that now we have got two captains. One in red-ball cricket and one in white-ball cricket. So, Rohit will get enough time to groom white-ball cricket. Whether it is the T20 format or ODI format." He went on to add that, "I feel Rohit Sharma as a leader will definitely do really well for Indian cricket. Plus Indian cricket is in very safe hands, especially in white-ball cricket."

Team India have won eight of the ten ODI games they have played under Rohit Sharma. The Mumbaikar has also won 18 of 22 matches as captain in the shortest format of the game. Speaking of Rohit Sharma's stint at Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians, Gambhir said that Rohit has won 5 IPL titles, which shows that he must have done something right as compared to the other captains.
