The new year brings a fresh start, likely so even for the sporting world. This year, more tournaments and leagues been lined up for the sports fans. Although all of it needs careful planning, many more things to consider, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic that has been looming over us for close to two years now.

Although it’s still the first month of the new year, there have been several speculations about the Indian Premier League season. Joining the bandwagon in a latest update is England Skipper Joe Root, who is considering adding his name in the Mega Auction of the 2022 season. However, Root mentioned that there were many aspects for him to consider before finally signing up for the upcoming IPL season this year.

It may be noted that the IPL 2022 mega auction is to take place in Bengaluru on 12-13 February. Before that, Joe Root will have to make his final decision of playing in the cash-rich league. This time the league has welcomed two new franchises- namely, Lucknow and Ahmedabad.

Won’t compromise on playing Test cricket: Joe Root

However, speaking of Joe Root’s inclusion for the tournament, he went on to mention that, “I have not made a decision on that just yet. It is something I will have to keep wrestling with. Time is ticking but I have a lot to weigh up,” Root was quoted as saying in the pre-match press conference.

“The thing I will weigh up is will it have a negative impact on me playing Test cricket for this team. If I don’t then I will put myself in that position to play and put myself in the auction.

“But I will never compromise or do anything that will detract from playing Test cricket for England. It is so important to make sure that is the priority for me and other players as well,” he added.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is still in the planning stage of how to host the season, which is likely to begin from 2nd April and go on till 3rd June. BCCI might host the 15th edition of the league in South Africa or Sri Lanka if the COVID-19 situation in India does not normalize.
