The leader of the Cenation and the 16-time World Champion John Cena may have gone to make a name for himself as one of the biggest icons of WWE but he has now revealed that he was once close to getting fired from the company. He disclosed how he was about to be axed from the company but it was his rap character which turned out to be his saviour and he eventually made it big in WWE.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Cena said that if it wasn't for his freestyle rapping in a WWE tour bus, he would have been shown the exit door by the company. Cena's first character wasn't quite as entertaining until the "Doctor of Thuganomics" happened.

Was just about to be fired after a year and a half of me trying to connect with the audience: Cena

"So I debuted as John Cena, the stalest, unentertaining character you can imagine, and was just about to be fired after a year and a half of me trying to connect with the audience. On what was supposed to be one of my last tours – when we go overseas we all travel together – and in the back of the bus, people were freestyling. I remember I just went back and joined in, and in the front of the bus, the creative department was like ‘hey how did you remember all that?'" he said (via Inside Sport).

Cena further said how he explained to the creative team about his freestyle rapping that in turn weaved magic. He said that during his teenage he was bulled for his style of wrestling but everything changed with the "Doctor of Thuganomics" character post which things started falling in place.

Cena was booked against Roman Reigns at the WWE Summerslam where he was made to look like a jobber. After the heavy defeat, it seemed like all might well be over for him in WWE. While he continues to make a mark in Hollywood doing several projects, that does not mean that his in-ring career is over. In fact, in a social media post from his own account, Cena said that he will return soon despite the defeat to Roman Reigns.
