12 of India’s leading boxers including Sachin test positive for COVID-19 in NIS Patiala camp

All Covid-affected members have been put in isolation at a quarantine facility inside one of the hostels in NIS.

COVID-19 rocked the men’s national boxing camp at NIS Patiala on Wednesday as 12 of India’s leading boxers tested for the virus. Among these, reigning youth world boxing champion Sachin and 2017 youth boxing national champion Muhammed Etash Khan were also there. A total of 18 people at the national camp in NIS Patiala have been found infected by the coronavirus at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) in NIS Patiala.

Indian men’s boxing head coach Narendra Rana and coach (coordination) CA Kuttappa have also contracted the virus. The coordination coach Kuttappa has contracted the virus for the second time. He had tested positive during the second wave of COVID-19 in April last year.

18 People have tested positive for the virus

A total of 18 national campers have been found positive with the coronavirus at the Boxing Federation of India’s (BFI) national coaching camp for elite men’s boxers in NIS. The 12 elite boxers who have tested positive for the Covid-19 are Kuldeep Kumar (48kg), Sachin (57kg), Muhammed Etash Khan (60kg), Aman Indora (60kg), Vijay Kumar (60kg), Dalveer Singh Tomar (63.5kg), Ashish Chaudhary (63.5kg), Keisham Johnson Singh (63.5kg), Akash (67kg), Sandeep Kumar (67kg), Nikhil Dubey (75kg) and Sagar (+92kg).

Apart from Narendra Rana and CA Kuttappa, assistant coach Suranjoy Singh, support staff personnel masseurs Vijay Kamboj, Pawan Kumar, and video analyst Nitin Kumar have also tested positive. Team doctor Karanjeet Singh also has the symptoms.

As reported by the Times of India, all Covid-affected members have been put in isolation at a quarantine facility inside one of the hostels in NIS. They will have to remain in quarantine for one week and an RT-PCR test will be conducted on the sixth day.

90 People are at BFI’s national camp

A total of 90 personnel (63 boxers across different weight categories and 27 coaching and support staff) are part of the national camp organized by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). A separate facility for the female boxers has been organized at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium (IGI). The camp has 57 women boxers, including Olympic Games bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain, and 25 coachings and support staff.
