South Africa's premium pacer Kagiso Rabada has been rested for the 3-match ODI series against India, which is starting from January 19. Rabada was the top wicket-taker for the Proteas side in the recently concluded Test series which the hosts won 2-1.

Cricket South Africa said the decision to release Rabada was taken to manage Rabada's "workload". CSA wants to make sure that the pacer recovers in time for the New Zealand tour scheduled next month.

No replacement has been announced for the pacer. However, George Linde, who was part of the Test squad, has been retained as an extra spin-bowling option.

Meanwhile, Quinton de Kock, who retired from Test cricket after the series opener against India, will return in the white-ball format. Pacer Marco Jansen, who impressed everyone in the Test series, is likely to make his debut tomorrow.

The three-match ODI series between India and South Africa will start from Thursday at Boland Park in Paarl.

South Africa updated ODI squad for India Series: Temba Bavuma (captain), Keshav Maharaj (vice-captain), Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), Zubayr Hamza, Marco Jansen, Janneman Malan, Sisanda Magala, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, George Linde, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne.
