In what comes as a major blow to Team India, dynamic opening batter KL Rahul, who tested positive for COVID-19 on July 21, is reportedly set to miss the entire upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies, starting on July 29 at Tarouba. Earlier, reports claimed that the batter will miss the series opener but was supposed to join the Indian camp for remainder of the matches.

However, the BCCI is not mulling to announce any replacement for the senior Indian batter. A BCCI source close to the development have informed that the batter has been advised to take more rest to recover from COVID and BCCI's medical professionals are of the opinion that Rahul should take the field when he is completely fit.

"Either Rishabh Pant or Ishan Kishan is likely to open with Rohit Sharma. There is not point in sending someone now," a BCCI source was quoted as saying. Notably, Rahul has been recovering at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru since undergoing a hernia surgery in late June.

Reports have also hinted that KL Rahul will not miss the two-match T20Is series against USA, and is expected to be back in action in the upcoming Zimbabwe tour where India will play three ODIs against the home team. Notably, Rahul has not played any competitive cricket since the IPL 2022 Eliminator on May 25, when his team Lucknow Super Giants was beaten by Royal Challengers Bangalore in Kolkata. Post-IPL, Rahul was named the skipper for the five-match T20I series at home against South Africa, but suffered a right groin injury on the eve of the series opener in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Team India has played bilateral contest against South Africa, England and Ireland under the leadership of various captains. In the absence of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant led the squad against South Africa, while Hardik Pandya was named skipper for Ireland tour. Regular all-format skipper Rohit Sharma was back in action for the first-time after IPL against England in the white-ball series.

At present, Team India has already clinched three-match ODI series under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan by winning first two matches, as both sides will regroup for the third and final ODI on Wednesday (27th July).
