The debate over sudden transition in India ODI’s captaincy from Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma is far from over, and now Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has alleged that BCCI did not maintain transparency and questioned the decision. The senior selection committee headed by Chetan Sharma, on December 8, announced their decision to name Rohit Sharma as the ODI skipper, via a tweet.

Ever since, the apex body has received mixed reactions from cricket fraternity over the manner in which the transition was announced. Reportedly, Sharma, who trained Kohli during his early days has said that, “Kohli specifically stepped down from T20 captaincy but the selectors being the supreme decision maker must have asked him to either leave the captaincy from both the white-ball formats or not step down at all.”

Can’t recall any moment where Ganguly stopped Kohli from quitting T20 captaincy: Sharma

Expressing his surprise over the comment of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, Sharma added that, “I can’t recall any such moment where Ganguly made efforts to stop Kohli from quitting T20 captaincy before the World Cup.”

The coach also felt that the manner in which the whole sequence has unfolded is a “pity.” Adding further, he was reportedly quoted as saying, “The selection committee doesn’t provide a reason behind the decision. We don’t know what the management or the BCCI or the selectors want. There’s no clarification, no transparency at all.”

Since the whole sequence unfolded, several people have raised questions but BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was quick to respond and claimed that the decision was taken in the welfare of Indian cricket and the body came to conclusion after discussing the matter with Kohli as well as Rohit Sharma.

Speaking about cricket, the Indian team is set to fly to South Africa for a month-long tour comprising of three Tests and as many as ODIs. Kohli will lead the team in Test series, while Rohit Sharma will be leading the team for the first time as full time skipper in white ball format.
