Real Madrid will host Sevilla at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano on Sunday for their crucial La Liga encounter which has gone down to the wire this season. While Madrid will head into this contest on the back of a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal, Sevilla lost 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in their latest La Liga game.
With the La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona ending in a goalless draw, Real Madrid will have a chance to equal the number of points with the table toppers Atletico. Thus, Zinedine Zidane and his team will play for all the three points and take a step closer to the La Liga title this year.
While Dani Carvajal and winger Lucas Vazquez will be unavailable for selection for this match, there are also doubts over the availability of French centre-back Raphael Varane. Real Madrid will also be without Ferland Mendy and Sergio Ramos.
As far as Sevilla are concerned, there are no known injury or availability concerns for this match and they should be able to play their best starting XI.
Real Madrid would have to keep their defeat against Chelsea behind them in order to focus on this match. They put on a disappointing show in the UEFA Champions League game but this is La Liga where they have been strong and a win will be a huge boost to their chances. However, this is a strong Sevilla side and they are not too far from the summit either sitting at the fourth place with 70 points and Zidane shouldn’t make the mistake of underestimating them.
The match could proceed like the one between Atletico and Barca on Saturday with the title race still wide open but with their immense experience over the years of winning crunch matches, Real should start in a better headspace with three points their only mission of the evening.
