We are just a few days away from the much-awaited League of Legends World Championships and there is already lot of excitement among players and fans. The tournament, which was initially set to take place in China, will now be held in Iceland and will take place from October 5 to November 6. Ahead of the mega event, the draws (primary groups and play-in groups) have finally been revealed on Wednesday.
After the Vietnamese teams pulled out, the event is set to feature 22 teams in the tournament. 12 of those have been placed in four primary groups each which are as follows:
Primary Groups
Group A: Damwon KIA, FunPlus Phoenix, Rogue
Group B: EDward Gaming, 100 Thieves, T1
Group C: PSG Talon, Fnatic, Royal Never Give Up
Group D: MAD Lions, Gen.G, Team Liquid
Rest of the 10 teams have notably been placed in two play-in groups (of 5 teams each). It will act as a qualifying round with two teams from each group making their way into the main round. The 4 qualified teams will be placed in one primary group each to complete the final draw.
Play-in Groups
Group A: Hanwha Life Esports, LNG Esports, Infinity Esports, PEACE, RED Canids
Group B: Beyond Gaming, Cloud 9, Unicorns of Love, Galatasaray Esports, DetonatioN FocuMe
Schedule of the event
October 5-7: Play-in group matches
- All teams will face each other once in single round robin format
- Top team will qualify for the main event
- The team finishing 5th from each play-in group will be eliminated
October 8-9: Play-in knockouts
- The teams finishing at 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions respectively (from each play-in group) will clash
- Two top teams from this stage will qualify for the main event
October 11-18: Primary Group matches
- 16 teams (in 4 groups each) will kick off the main event
- The matches will be played in double round robin format
- Top two teams from each group will qualify for quarter-finals
- The bottom two teams from each group will be eliminated
October 22-November 6: Knockout Stage
- Teams will play the final knockout stage, with QFs, SFs and Final
- All matches will be in best-of-five format
It must ne noted that the members of winning team will lift the prestigious Summoner's Cup to become the League of Legends 2021 World Champions.
