Leicester Cricket Ground to be named after Indian legend and former skipper Sunil Gavaskar

The legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar is set to have a 5-acre ground in Leicestershire named after him.

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar is regarded as one of greats of the game and has carved his name in the history books courtesy to ample of runs he has scored during playing days. The batting legend has been India’s global ambassador over the decades now and apart from India, he has several stadiums named after him in countries like the US, and Tanzania.

In the latest development, the legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar is set to have a 5-acre ground in Leicestershire named after him. According to reports, Gavaskar will be first Indian cricketer to have a ground named after him in England or anywhere in Europe.

Responding to the development, the 73-year-old, who is in London told Times of India, that he is extremely delighted and honored to have a ground in Leicester. “Leicester is a city with possibly the strongest supporters of the game, especially Indian cricket, and therefore it is a huge honor indeed,” said Gavaskar.

According to reports, Leicester will unveil his name plaque at the ground, which belongs to Bharat Sports and Cricket Club. Reports have indicated that Gavaskar’s photo has already been painted on one entire wall of the pavilion.

The initiative came from Keith Vaz, the UK’s longest-serving MP of Indian origin who has represented Leicester in the UK parliament for 32 years. Vaz now heads a diaspora organisation named Integration Foundation. While speaking to reporters, Vaz said that he is thrilled and honored that Indian legend has agreed to have his pitch and ground named after him.

“He is a living legend and over the years. He has shattered several batting records and a perfect role model for young cricket aspirants who will be inspired and motivated to do well in future,” added Vaz.

Rash Patel from Bharat Sports and Cricket Club also spoke about this development. He said that they could not have roped in better role model for young player than Gavaskar. “It is wonderful that Gavaskar has agreed to our plans. It is so special for future generations of cricketers” Patel added.

Notably, Gavaskar is the first batsman to go past 10,000 runs in the Test cricket and once held the record for most runs and most centuries in the longest format of the game.
