Virat Kohli's decision to quit as India's captain from Tests came as a major surprise to the entire cricket fraternity. The fans could not understand the logic behind country's most successful captain in red-ball cricket suddenly stepping down from his position.

The 33-year-old has always talked about giving importance to his family and since he is now also father of a young daughter, he might have wanted to take over the mental burden of captaincy off himself. Well, this could be one of the reasons but was there anything else also which could have played a part in the whole situation?

With everyone speculating the possible contributing factors, we also tried to list out 3 main reasons why Kohli might have stepped down as captain of national sides in whites considering various possible scenarios.

1. Ongoing issues with BCCI

It is no secret that there have been some ongoing issues between Virat Kohli and BCCI in the last few months. The way Kohli was removed from ODI captaincy became a national issue where many experts and fans opined that the 33-year-old was mistreated by the board. There were contradictory statements made by Kohli and BCCI on the whole issue which revealed that there was indeed a communication gap between the two parties. The whole politics around the situation could have been a contributing factor in him stepping down as Test captain as well.

2. New coaching staff

Virat Kohli is not someone who gets along with everyone very easily. Well, his infamous saga with Anil Kumble is known to everyone. But he formed a brilliant relationship alongside Ravi Shastri and the duo's aggressive attitude made their bonding even stronger which played a key role in some of India's incredible overseas wins in Tests. However, the departure of Shastri, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar could be one of the reasons why Kohli has also moved aside. There is a possibility that Kohli's vision might not have matched with Rahul Dravid and Co. which could have prompted him to take the big call.

3. To focus on his batting

The right-handed batsman has been struggling with form off late with no international centuries in the last two years. Although he had a decent Test series in South Africa, it looked like he was carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders. The job of an Indian captain, especially in the longest format of the game, is indeed not easy with so much pressure from media, fans and experts. This could have been one of the reasons where Kohli would have thought of getting all his focus back on batting where he can play more freely, bringing back the old version of fearless Kohli as a batsman.

Although no one knows what exactly happened, fans would just hope that Kohli continues to be the dangerous batsman as he has been for India while national cricket keeps on moving forward and reaches much greater heights in the post-Kohli era.
