The star players of cricket from all over the world have graced the Indian Premier League (IPL) with their presence during its illustrious history, delivering some of the great moments in the competition. While most of the players have earned due recognition from the IPL franchises and fans respectively for their performances in the tournament over the years, there have been times when certain players, despite getting heavily invested upon, haven’t been able to give the desired results.
In this article, SportsTiger looks at five overrated cricketers who are getting the chance to play for teams in the IPL 2025.
Here is list of five overrated cricketers in IPL 2025
Deepak Chahar
Deepak Chahar, 32, was picked up by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 9.25 Crore in the mega auction ahead of the 2025 season of the IPL despite his fitness struggles and inconsistent performances over the past few years with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The bowling all-rounder hasn’t set the stage alight in the domestic T20 competition in the build-up to the new IPL season either, which is why the faith shown by MI on him might not work out for them.
Jaydev Unadkat
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) signed left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat in the IPL 2025 mega auction for his base price of INR 1 Crore after releasing him from the squad following an indifferent season last year. The 33-year-old has been a part of the IPL since 2009, and during his time in the league, he won the purple cap once in 2017 with 24 wickets, but apart from that, his performances haven’t quite been up to a standard expected from an experienced player.
Deepak Hooda
Deepak Hooda has had a couple of poor seasons in the IPL in Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) could, failing to impress with either bat, ball, or in the field. But regardless, CSK have signed the 29-year-old on an INR 1.70 Crore contract, which might not end up being a fruitful investment from the five-time IPL champions if he isn’t able to improve on his performances in the upcoming season.
Lungi Ngidi
Lungi Ngidi, the South African fast bowler, hasn’t played any IPL cricket since 2021 after being a part of CSK for three seasons, and he is struggling in international and franchise cricket due to indifferent form and injury concerns. Despite that, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have signed the 28-year-old for INR 1 Crore ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 season, which could turn out to be quite a difficult one for him.
Dhruv Jurel
Dhruv Jurel has grown quite a bit as a wicket-keeper batter under Rajasthan Royals (RR) over the past couple of years since making his IPL debut in 2023, and it has led to him getting picked in the Indian cricket team in the T20I format. But, at the same time, RR retained him for an INR 14 Crore contract in the mega auction, which is quite a big sum of money to throw at a player who wasn’t anywhere close to being the centrepiece of the long-term plans till last season of the IPL, and as a consequence, letting go the bonafide legend Jos Buttler.
