Days after being snubbed as Team India’s assistant coach, Abhishek Nayar has rejoined defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025. His move to the three-time champions, KKR comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to not renew his contract in the national Indian team.

Nayar, who was with KKR from 2018 till 2024, joined the Indian team as a backroom staff with Gautam Gambhir being appointed the Team India head coach. But his stint with the Men in Blue got him several eyeballs with the team’s disappointing results as well. In the review, he was speculated to be the first major casualty, especially seeing India’s poor run in Test cricket.

"Abhishek Nayar has rejoined our support staff. He is likely to be at training at Eden today," a franchise statement read on April 19. Moreover, his appointment comes after Varun Chakravarthy also shared a cryptic post which has “Homecoming” written on it.

Speaking of the defending champions, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side are placed sixth in the IPL 2025 points table with three wins and four losses from seven matches. The Kolkata-based franchise will hope to get their results back on track from now on as they are set to play Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Monday, April 21.
