The Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has been dropped on the bench by the head coach Rigobert Song in their must-win clash against Gambia in Group C of the AFCON 2023. The 27-year-old, who arrived to play in AFCON from Manchester, wasn’t picked in the first game against Guinea, and he had a tough outing versus Senegal in the next outing.
For Senegal, their opening Group C fixture in the AFCON 2023 against Guinea ended in a 1-1 draw, but they were soundly beaten by Senegal with a 3-1 margin, with Andre Onana making a big mistake in their defeat. Notably, Cameroon team management didn’t pick the goalkeeper against Guinea because he arrived to play in the competition on the same day after being flown out by Manchester United on a private jet.

After two games each for all four teams in Group C of the AFCON 2023, Cameroon are in third place with just one point to their name. With that, they need to defeat Gambia in the upcoming clash to have any chance of finishing in second place at best.
Cameroon can’t overhaul the defending champions Senegal, who have six points to their name after two wins in two. Moreover, they will be hoping for Senegal’s win against Guinea apart from a positive result against Gambia to get a comparatively more favourable draw in the knockout stages of the AFCON 2023.
Notably, Andre Onana has earned 37 caps for Cameroon, while his compatriot Fabrice Ondoa has got 49 caps in his international career. But at the current stage of their respective careers, Onana is playing for Manchester United in the English Premier League, and in comparison, Ondoa is taking the responsibility of goal-keeping for the French third-tier club Nimes Olympique.
