Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Monday, December 9 confirmed extension of former England cricketer and Afghanistan Head Coach, Jonathan Trott’s contract until the end of 2025. The decision of ACB came late on Monday, following his successful stint in the coaching role from last two-and-a-half years.
Taking to social media, the ACB captioned a post which read, “More excitement is on its way as ACB extends Jonathon Trott’s contract as the National Team’s Head Coach for 2025”. Moreover, in its release it stated, “The decision comes in after his successful 2.5-year tenure, during which he made significant contributions to the team’s progress and development.”

It is to be noted that under Trott’s stint, Afghanistan cricket team has achieved remarkable success including their improvement in the team’s performance by leaps and bounds in the recent years. In ICC events, Afghanistan finished in sixth place in 2023 ODI Wolrd Cup, securing notable victories against England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the Netherlands.
They continued their form at the 2024 T20 World Cup, defeating Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand to reach their first-ever semi-final in an ICC tournament.
Jonathan Trott to miss T20I and Test-leg of Zimbabwe tour
Moreover, Afghanistan are currently on their tour of Zimbabwe where they will play three-match T20I series, followed by as many ODIs and two Tests. However, Trott will only be with the side for the 50-over format tour and will be unavailable for the T20I and Test leg due to personal commitments. In his absence, the Afghanistan team will be overlooked by Hamid Hassan.
“Jonathan Trott will accompany the squad only in ODIs, whereas he will remain unavailable for the T20Is and Test matches due to his personal commitments. Hamid Hassan will step up and take on the role of Head Coach in Trott's absence," the statement released by ACB further added.
