Former India international and Lok Sabha member Gautam Gambhir is set to leave the Indian Premier League franchise Lucknow Super Giants. Gambhir has been with the Lucknow-based franchise since its inception in 2022 as a mentor and could be the second major exit from the team's leadership group after head coach Andy Flower was replaced by Australia legend Justin Langer.
The development surfaces after LSG appoint former India wicketkeeper and ex-chief selector of the BCCI, MSK Prasad, as a strategic advisor. As reported by Dainik Jagran, a source associated with IPL talked about how after Flower, Gambhir is also ready to leave LSG.
Addressing Prasad's appointment, LSG released a statement stressing how the former chief selector will function as the Head of Talent Search. Along with talent development, Prasad will also handle the team's academy business.
Under Andy Flower and Gautam Gambhir, the Luck Super Giants managed to reach the playoffs twice in their first two seasons. With Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul as the captain, Lucknow clinched the third spot with nine wins before losing to the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator in 2022. The Super Giants had a similar fate in the 2023 season with another third-place finish and a defeat in the Eliminator, against the Mumbai Indians.
Talking about the coming season, the new LSG head coach, Justin Langer expressed excitement about the opportunity and said, “Lucknow Super Giants are on the journey of building a great story in the IPL. We all have a role to play in that journey and I am excited to be a part of the team moving forward.”
