Virat Kohli shockingly announced his decision to step down as India's Test captain a day after Dean Elgar's South African side defeated Team India in a three-match Test series at Newlands Cricket Ground. What followed was a storm of good wishes, congratulatory tweets, best regards from former cricketers, fans, and people of the cricket fraternity. However, on the other hand fans were extremely disappointed, upset and heartbroken on having to witness a revolution of sorts within Indian cricket.

Senior Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane, who has been under fire recently for his poor performances in the recent past and in the recently concluded South Africa series, also went on to congratulate Virat Kohli. He took to Twitter to post,"Congrats on a fantastic captaincy stint, Virat ??. Lots of special memories. Wishing you the best always!"

However, the comments section on Rahane's tweet were filled with comments like "Thanks rahane", "retire peacefully", "when you retiring", "please retire" as fans took out their anger on the middle-order batter for his poor performances. In 2021, the former Indian Test vice-captain could only amass 547 runs from 15 matches at an average of just 20.25. While the Mumbai cricketer did manage to register three half-centuries with his best score being 67, he has been dismissed at single-digit scores on 11 occasions thereby, adding too much pressure on the Indian middle and lower-order in red-ball cricket.

It may be noted that Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara both are experienced middle order batters and both have been backed by team India management. However, they regularly face backlash on social media for their consistent poor form. Netizens believe that the youngsters of the squad should find a spot in the Playing XI. While other cricketers, commentators and people in the cricket fraternity reckoned that the duo's match against South Africa could be their last and final chance to feature for Team India.
