With the Wimbledon 2025 underway in the United Kingdom (UK), the second day of the grass court Grand Slam saw some surprises. With top-seeded Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic already into the next round, third seeded Alexander Zverev suffered a shocking exit after being tumbled by an unseeded Frenchman.
Zverev, a three-time Grand Slam runners-up, went down 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (8/10), 6-3, 6-3 (5/7), 6-4 against France’s Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round of Wimbledon 2025. The German with a loss, made an exit from the tournament, marking his earliest Grand Slam exit since 2019.

Speaking of Zverev’s match, which lasted for four hours and 40 minutes on the Centre Court, the 28-year-old fought hard in the opening set, but the Frenchman reined 7-6. Thereafter, the 28-year-old bounced back to settle in the second set 7-6 (10/8), but his struggles were prevalent in the third set. In the fourth set of the RO128 match, Zverev got back in the game, taking the set 7-6, but went down in the final set 4-6.
“I feel very alone out there at times. I struggle. Mentally, I’ve been saying that I’ve struggled since after the Australian Open. Just don’t know. Trying to find ways to get out of this hole. I keep finding myself back in it. I feel generally speaking quite alone in life at the moment, which is a feeling that is not very nice,” Zverev said after his defeat.
It is to be noted that Zverev reached the Australian Open final in January 2025. While it was his first exit since 2019, Zverev has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon three times, including last year, where he lost to Taylor Fritz in five sets.
