The Kolkata Knight Riders pulled off an incredible win over Mumbai Indians to keep their playoff hopes alive. After a good start, KKR suffered a collapse in the first innings, courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah, who took five wickets while giving just 10 runs. But KKR recovered well in the second innings as they bundled out MI for 113.
In the second innings, Pat Cummins continued to haunt the Mumbai Indians as he registered a spell of three for 22 runs in four overs. Notably, he took all three wickets in the same over to break the back of Mumbai.
Celebrating their top performers, KKR had posted a picture with Iyer and Cummins on their Twitter account with the caption, “Ending the night with a star-studded selfie! ?@patcummins30 @venkateshiyer #AmiKKR #MIvKKR #IPL2022.” Then moments later, Cummins retweeted the photo and posted, “All business ?.”
When the team wins you naturally feel happy: Iyer
In the post-match interview, Venkatesh Iyer talked about his performance after a string of bad games. He said, “It was good, coming back (after getting dropped) and opening the innings. Feels good, when the team wins you naturally feel happy.”
“It's important to contribute, with the bat, or ball or in the field. Fielding is very important for me and so is bowling. Unfortunately, I didn't get a lot of overs, but whatever overs I get, I ensure I do the job that the captain wants me to do.”
“It's my job to go out there and give my team a good start. My intent is always positive and aggressive, sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. With the middle order, we have it's important to have a good start so that they (other batters) can come in and contribute.”
We've got to find a method to not lose too many wickets: McCullum
KKR coach Brendon McCullum talked about the team’s performance in the post-match press conference. He said, “We've struggled in the powerplay, which has been a bit of a frustration for us right throughout the season. We've been good throughout the middle phase, not too bad at the death, but the powerplay, we've been a little stuck.”
“We've got to find a method to not lose too many wickets [in the powerplay] and throw a few punches and pick up a few boundaries because at the moment we are sort of stuck in between and opposition teams are taking advantage of that.”
