The Man Utd forward was charged in October with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm but all the charges were dropped after the withdrawal of key witnesses.

“A combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”, Crown Prosecution Service said.

The 21-year-old faced one count of attempted rape, one count of controlling and coercive behaviour, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, all against his ex-girlfriend.

Greenwood made his Man Utd debut in 2019 and England debut in September 2020. However, he along with  Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden was sent home after breaching the team’s Coronavirus guidelines. Greenwood then signed a contract extension with Manchester United in 2021.

However, once the allegation against the footballer surfaced online, the club terminated Greenwood's contract.  Nike later terminated its sponsorship deal with the player and EA Sports removed him from FIFA 2022 game active squad.
