While KL Rahul looks to be in his prime form seeing his performance in the Pakistan vs India Asia Cup Super 4s fixture, do the Men in Blue really need Shreyas Iyer? Well this might be the question in many minds after Iyer was dropped citing a back spasm at the toss of Pakistan vs India clash.

Although, several felt that the team management wanted to include KL Rahul and that is the reason they called for Iyer to have suffered a back spasm, but the things came to a conclusion during the post-match presentation post India’s 228-run win against Pakistan. As per the latest update, Shreyas Iyer is currently unavailable for selection and will sit out for the Super 4s fixture against Sri Lanka.

Just minutes ahead of the start of the India vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup Super 4s, BCCI took to Twitter to put up an update on Iyer's injury. "Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasm. He has been adviced rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India's Super 4 match against Sri Lanka," the statement read.

Rohit Sharma during the post-match presser revealed that KL Rahul’s inclusion was decided five minutes prior to toss when a spokesperson informed Iyer to have experienced a back spasm in a warm-up session. “And then KL, to return from injury and then find out 5 minutes before toss that he’s playing and to perform the way he did, it shows the mindset of the player,” Sharma quoted.

This forced changed is expected to keep Iyer out of the XI for the later games, including the match against Sri Lanka and also keeping in mind the World Cup, set to kick start next month in India.

The Men in Blue will now take on Sri Lanka on Tuesday, 12th September, making it three days of back-to-back gametime. The side is expected to call in for some changes in the XI as they take the field.
