The 655-member strong contingent bagged 107 medals at the 19th Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. With the pre-event prediction and aim to breach the 100-medal mark at the Asian Games, the Indian contingent achieved this registering their best-ever finish at the continental showpiece.
India finished fourth with 107 medals under its name, which included 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze, surpassing their previous best of 70 medals, which they achieved at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. The best result came on India’s final day, which was a day prior to the official closing of the Games.
The Indian athletes bagged 12 medals on the final day of their campaign at the Games, clinching six gold, four silver and two bronze. The season also saw India etch some of their historic firsts, including India’s gold medal in equestrian, putting an end to the 41-year-long wait, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty becoming first-ever Indian shuttlers to win gold at the Asiad and so on.
The final day also saw India men and women’s kabaddi team win the gold and India’s Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam clinching three gold medals in archery. While for now this is set as the best-ever finish for India at the Games, the athletes will aim to reset it once again in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in 2026.
