Asian Games 2023 Table Tennis: Sutirtha and Ayhika Mukherjee win first-ever medal in women’s doubles; clinch bronze

With a single bronze, Indian TT contingent ended their campaign at the ongoing Games.

The Indian women’s pair of Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee settled for a historic bronze medal finish in the doubles semifinals on Monday, 2 October 2023. The Indian duo, who entered the semifinals after beating world ranked number 1 pair, lost to North Korean pair 3-4.

The pair brought the match on even-keel after initially trailing 2-3. But the Korean pair of Sugyong Pak and Suyog Cha outplayed the Indian duo in the decider, winning the match 7-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 5-11, 11-2 in a 60-minute battle.

The Indian women’s pair became the third Indian duo to win a medal at the Games after a men’s team bronze in 2018 Asian Games, followed by a mixed doubles bronze (Sharath Kamal/Manika Batra) in 2018. With this, the Indian table tennis contingent ended their campaign with a single medal, that too a historic one.
