On Friday, February 14, Sri Lanka demolished Australia in the second ODI by a massive margin of 174 runs, to win the two-match series 2-0 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After putting together a substantial total of 281/4 on the back of a hundred from Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka’s bowling lineup bundled out Australia for just 107 runs in 24.2 overs with a four-wicket haul from Dunith Wellalage, and it sent the social media platform X into a complete frenzy.
In the first half of the match, apart from a three-figure score from Kusal Mendis, the likes of Nishan Madushka and captain Charith Asalanka got fifties, which helped Sri Lanka post a competitive total on the board. The pursuit of the 282-run target began poorly for Australia as they lost their top three batters, namely Matthew Short, Jake-Fraser McGurk, and Travis Head in the first power play stage to pacer Asitha Fernando.
Australian captain Steve Smith and Josh Inglis shared a fourth wicket stand of 46 runs, to steady the ship for the visitors, but from that point onwards, their batting just crumbled to the spin of Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga. The last six batters of the Australian lineup didn’t reach a double-digit score as Wellalage picked four wickets, while Hasaranga chipped-in with three wickets, to help bundle them out after they got past their 100.
