"We were supposed to play at the US Open 2022, but she got injured. We are hoping we can again get going. I think it is still important if we together can set an example for Indian players," Bopanna said.

Notably, the pair has an experience of playing together in the past. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, they lost the bronze medal play-off match to Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka. They made it to the third round in the Wimbledon 2021 but lost to 14th seeded Andreja Klepac and Jean-Julien Roger. Meanwhile, Bopanna kick started his 2023 season at the ongoing Maharashtra Open.

He has paired up with Netherlands' Botic van de Zandschulp in the Men's Doubles. The pair lost the first round to Miguel Rael Varela and Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-7, 7-6, 9-11. He will next feature in the Adelaide International 2 event. In the ATP 250 tournament, he will be teaming up with Matthew Ebden for the entire season. Whereas Sania Mirza decided to quit professional tennis after the 2022 season.

However, she had pulled herself out of the US Open after suffering an injury last year in August. She changed her retirement plans and is now gearing up to play yet another season on the tour. She was recently seen in action at the World Tennis League in Dubai. She will also feature in Women's Doubles with world number 11 Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan.
