World number one men’s tennis player C arlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the upcoming Australian Open 2023. The reason behind Alcaraz’s absence is the leg injury he suffered during his pre-season training. In 2022, the 19-year-old became the youngest men's world number one in history after winning his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open in September.

Alcaraz was set to play in the Kooyong Classic next week before the Australian Open begins on January 16. The Spaniard was dealing with an abdominal injury which ruled him out of the ATP Finals and Davis Cup towards the end of 2022, cutting short his season.

Carlos Alcaraz confirmed his injury through Twitter as he expressed that he is still optimistic about his future and will come back stronger to Melbourne Park in 2024. The tweet said, "I picked up an injury through a chance, unnatural movement in training.”

“I'd worked so hard to get to my best level for Australia but unfortunately I won't be able to play," the world's top-ranked player added.  "It's tough, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look forward. We'll see you at the Australian Open in 2024."

Alcaraz has made two appearances at the Australian Open and reached the second round after coming through qualifying in 2021. Whereas last year, he was beaten in five sets by Matteo Berrettini in the last 32. The 19-year-old's withdrawal makes the defending champion and 22-time major winner Rafael Nadal the top seed at Grand Slam.
