On Saturday, January 18, Chairman of national selection committee Ajit Agarkar, along with skipper Rohit Sharma announced India’s 16-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against England. It is to be noted that India is set to host England in a limited-overs series, starting from January 22. While the two sides will first lock horns in five-match T20I series, followed by three ODIs, commencing from February 6.
Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the side in the 50-over format, Shubman Gill, who was earlier named his deputy in the Sri Lanka series, will continue to serve in the role for the three-match ODI series, followed by the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, scheduled to be played from February 19 onwards in Pakistan and the UAE.
Jasprit Bumrah's participation in England ODIs subject to fitness
However, the squad is same for the two upcoming 50-over assignments, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be fit by the third ODI, set to be played on February 12 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Speaking during the squad announcement on Saturday afternoon, Ajit Agarkar spoke at length of Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness adding, “We are waiting on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness and will know his status in early February from BCCI’s medical team.”
He also reiterated that Bumrah was asked to offload for five weeks, which makes the BCCI to reconnect with him in the opening week of February. Moreover, they have named Harshit Rana for the England ODIs ahead of Mohammed Siraj keeping Bumrah’s fitness in mind. Additionally, Yashasvi Jasiwal has also received a maiden call-up in the 50-over format.
