Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi hit out at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and described the ongoing drama over Champions Trophy 2025 as a clash of politics and sports. Notably, the International Cricket Council is set to announce its final decision over the fate of the forthcoming tournament on Friday, November 29. Amid the uncertainty of the tournament, the former spinner highlighted the concerns about fairness and the governance of international cricket.
The former cricketer took to social media and urged the international board to unhold fairness and assert its authority. He criticised the BCCI and said that Pakistan expressed their willingness to tour India in the past amid security concerns and political strife. Not only this, but he also expressed support of PCB’s stance in rejecting the hybrid model for the hosting of the ICC tournament.
BCCI has placed international cricket in precarious position: Shahid Afridi
The former cricketer took to X and wrote, “By intertwining politics with sports, the BCCI has placed international cricket in a precarious position. Fully support the PCB's stance against the hybrid model - especially since Pakistan (despite security concerns) has toured India five times, including a bilateral white-ball series, post-26/11. It's time for the ICC and its Board of Directors to uphold fairness and assert their authority.”
For the unversed, India refused to play matches in Pakistan citing security concerns after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. On the other hand, the PCB has been firm on hosting the event in Pakistan and dismissed the proposal to host matches in Pakistan as well as the UAE.
