India had a great outing at the T20 World Cup 2022 until they faced England in the semifinals. The Men in Blue who topped Group 2 of Super 12s, were certainly short of answers against the Jos Buttler-led team. Indian batters could not attack the England bowlers and then the Indian bowlers could not survive the thrashing from Jos Buttler and Alex Hales.

England chased down the target set by  Team India  with four overs to spare, thanks to a 170-run partnership between the English openers. There were suddenly too many problems for India and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is certainty not pleased how the campaign ended for India. Hence, the Indian cricket board is planning on an overhaul.

According to reports, with just two years left for the next T20 World Cup, BCCI is planning to appoint a new captain and Hardik Pandya is most likely to succeed Rohit Sharma. The India all-rounder who captained India to a series win against Ireland and has been selected to lead the team in New Zealand is touted to take over the reins from Sharma. But a call on the same will be taken after the New Zealand series.

“Of course, some tough calls have to be made. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. We had preparations, sent the team early. Yes, two crucial injuries did derail our plans a bit. But that’s the nature of the game. If you see, England are also without Jofra Archer or Mark Wood. But they didn’t struggle today. As for captaincy, it is a matter of discussion. We will sit after the NZ series,” a senior BCCI official was quoted saying by InsideSport.

“Rohit will be rotated and rested constantly for big series and ICC tournaments. But one cannot rotate a captain too many times. Since T20s will not be in focus, we have to phase out Rohit gradually when someone like Hardik is ready to take the charge full-time,” he added.
