The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hopes to convince Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to lead the Indian team in the T20 format. Rohit Sharma has shown reluctance in playing the shortest format after the 2022 World T20 semi-final exit. The BCCI is hopeful that the Indian skipper to lead India in their upcoming T20I series against South Africa.

India is scheduled to tour South Africa for 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 2 Tests starting December 10 and the squads for all three series are likely to be announced by the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar on November 30, Thursday. In Rohit’s absence, Hardik Pandya held the team’s helm but after his hamstring injury in the ODI World Cup 2023, Suryakumar Yadav was called to lead India in the T20I series against Australia.

As per PTI, the BCCI has two choices; either to let Suryakumar continue to lead the team in Hardik’s absence in the T20I series against the Proteas or convince Rohit to return to lead the side in the three-match series. According to a BCCI source, “Yes, there remains a question of what happens when Hardik comes back but in BCCI, they feel that if Rohit agrees to lead in T20Is, he will lead in the T20 World Cup.”

The source added, “In case Rohit doesn’t agree then Surya continues as captain for T20Is in South Africa.”

Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer to return in Tests

According to reports, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer are set to make Test comeback during the series against South Africa. Apart from it, KL Rahul will also make his comeback into the Test squad which means Ajinkya Rahane might be snubbed while Cheteshwar Pujara is unlikely to make the cut as Virat Kohli will also return for the Test series.
