Belgian F2 driver Amaury Cordeel was caught overspeeding in his hometown of Temse. The 2023 Virtuosi driver reportedly reached a top speed of 179km/h on a stretch of road where the speed limit is 50km/h. Cordeel was caught as the incident was viral on Tik Tok.

Cordeel’s overspeeding incident dates back to December 2020 but was only found guilty recently. For the crime, the Belgian driver was fined €3,600 while also losing his driver’s licence for six months. Addressing the incident, Amaury Cordeel’s lawyer maintained that his client was not driving.

The lawyer said, "There can be no link whatsoever between the video and the fact that my client was driving," he said. "It was his father's car, but otherwise there is enough doubt to say that he was not driving."

Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel was previously unaware of the penalty imposed on the driver. He stated that he will have a discussion with the FIA regarding what possibly could be the right punishment of Cordeel. He said, "I'm learning what you're telling me just now!"

"It's probably something that will have to be discussed with the FIA, to see how to deal with it and whether to do anything special. We can't ignore that fact, that's for sure. I don't can't really answer your question, but it's something we definitely need to discuss with the FIA, to see how to handle it," Michel continued.

The news comes after the 20-year-old was confirmed by the Virtuosi team to be their driver for the 2023 season alongside Australia’s Jack Doohan. This will be Cordeel’s second campaign in Formula 2.

In the 2022 season, the Van Amersfoort driver has scored 26 points, all in the last five races of the year to conclude an overall difficult campaign. He also received a suspension for the Silverstone meeting after having accumulated twelve penalty points on his license.
