As bizarre as it may sound but one's name can decide the likelihood of one playing in a FIFA World Cup, statistical analysis reveals. As per data, as many as 7,829 players have played in a football World Cup, but Carlos, Jose and Luis have been the top three names to play in the marquee event.

Even amongst these, Carlos pips the other two as the top name to feature in the event with 72 Carlos having played in what is deemed to be the biggest sporting tournament in the world.

While 59 Jose-named players have played in the tournament's history, 56 Luis have represented their respective countries in the FIFA World Cup. In addition to their names, research suggests that even the birthplace of a person can decide the likelihood of a player playing in the football World Cup.

Uruguay's Montevideo, for instance, has produced the maximum number of players that have gone on to play in a World Cup. 72 players born in Mexico City have featured in the esteemed tournament while 66 from Buenos Aires and 63 from Rio de Janeiro have competed in the sporting spectacle. Rio also boasts of being the birthplace of a maximum of 5 World Cup winners.

France in with a chance to join Brazil and Italy in elite club

As the tournament opener on Sunday draws near, all eyes are on the defending champions who are in with a chance to join Brazil and Italy in an elite club. Notably, only two teams in the history of the FIFA World Cup have managed to lift the trophy two successive times- Italy and Brazil. While Italy achieved the feat, having won the Cup in 1934 and 1938, Brazil also won the trophy in 1958 and 1962.

This implies that if France can go on to win the World Cup this year, they will become just the third team to achieve the feat. France have trusted Didier Deschamps as the manager for the World Cup campaign, the same man who took the side to a Nations League win and a World Cup triumph in 2018.

France will miss the services of star players like Paul Pogba and N'Golo Kanté in this edition of the competition but they have no dearth of talent with players like Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema in their ranks. In the last 18 months, Mbappe has scored 39 goals in 46 matches and has another 26 assists to his credit. In addition, France have the reliable and experienced Hugo Lloris as their captain and goalkeeper.
