Portuguese striker and captain Cristiano Ronaldo is set to be benched against Switzerland in the Round of 16 match at FIFA World Cup 2022. The news was reported by the Portuguese media outlet called the Record.

Reports say that the decision to leave CR7 out of the starting eleven was taken on Tuesday. This change comes after Fernando Santos admitted that he was dissatisfied with Ronaldo’s attitude after he was substituted against South Korea.

Talking about the game, Ronaldo had a poor outing against the Asian powerhouse. CR7 had an xG of 0.30 and couldn't find a single shot on target throughout the game. But his biggest error came in the 26th minute of the game as his mistake allowed the Koreans to score their opening goal.

Then at the 65th-minute mark, when Fernando Santos subbed him off, Ronaldo was visibly angry with the decision. After the game, when Santos was asked about the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's reaction he talked about how he wasn't happy at all.

He said, "Have I seen the images? Yes, I didn’t like it, not at all. I didn’t like it. I really didn’t like it. But from that moment onwards everything is finished regarding that issue. These matters are resolved behind closed doors. It’s resolved."

Santos then expressed that he takes the decision regarding who will be the captain of the team and this has been the protocol. He said,  "I only decide who is going to be captain when I reach the stadium. I still don’t know what the lineup will be. That’s what I’ve always done and that’s what I’m always going to do and it’s going to be the same tomorrow. The other topic is solved. We have fixed that in-house and that’s it.”
