The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will now come under the National Sports Bill by the Indian government. As reported by India Today, a top source from the Sports ministry confirmed that the BCCI is now expected to come under the ambit of National Sports Federation (NSF) and will have to follow all the rules and guidelines by the Sports Ministry. With cricket getting included in the 2028 Olympic game, BCCI, which is now a part of National Sports Federation, will also be required to establish Athletes’ Committees.
Notably, the BCCI is a private entity and doesn't rely on the funding by the Indian government. However, as per the new draft Sports Bill unveiled by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the BCCI will now be recognised as a National Sports Federation. As BCCI is set to come under the National Sports Bill, it will also be beneficial for the board President Roger Binny.
Roger Binny gets lifeline as BCCI President as Indian board comes under National Sports Governance Bill
Former cricketer Roger Binny was appointed as new BCCI President replacing Sourav Ganguly in 2022. His tenure as a President was also going to end in 2025 as he turned 70 years old on July 19 this year. Notably, one cannot hold a position in the BCCI after the age of 70 and Vice-president Rajeev Shukla was set to replace him as a interim President until the board finds a new face.
However, as BCCI is now set to come under the National Sports Bill, the upper limit age gap in the board will increase from 70 to 75. This means that Roger Binny can continue as a BCCI President for a few more years despite turning 70 years old in July 2025.
