Alberta has withdrawn their bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games because of concerns over the costs involved. This is another blow to the Commonwealth Games Federation as Hamilton, Ontario had previously suspended their bid to host. Combined with the Australian state of Victoria pulling out of hosting the 2026 Games over concerns of costs overrunning, it is a precarious time for the federation.
The province of Alberta had initially considered a joint bid for the game, hosting between Edmonton and Calgary, before Tourism and Sports Minister Joseph Schow stated that the cost was too expensive for the province. The expected costs were revealed to be around GBP 1.5 billion.
Commonwealth Sport Canada said, “Commonwealth Sport Canada has been informed by the Alberta government that they have decided to discontinue the exploration of a 2030 Commonwealth Games Bid.”
They also explained that Victoria pulling out of the 2026 Games was a factor in the decision, and that the organization was disappointed in the province.
They added, “We believe the recent decision by the Victorian government to withdraw from the 2026 Commonwealth Games was a significant factor in Alberta's decision, as well as an over-dependence on taxpayer's support for the planning and delivery of the Games. Commonwealth Sport Canada is profoundly disappointed in Alberta Government's decision but respects their right to make this decision.”
Sadiq Khan says London could host 2026 Games
London’s Mayor Saqid Khan has stated that London might play host to the 2026 Games after Victoria has pulled out. The mayor stated that the city would be ready and able to host the large-scale event, though that any decision would ultimately lie with the government. It is reported that the British government wants Australia to take responsibility for the Games.
Other potential suitors might include India. Indian Olympic Association General Secretary Rajiv Mehta said that the country was interested in hosting the 2026 Games. Selangor in Malaysia and Sri Lanka are other countries vying to host the 2030 Games. Notably, Malaysia previously hosted the games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.
