Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis superstar, cruised into the quarter-final stage of the Rotterdam Open after dominating Andrea Vavassori of Italy in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16 clash on Thursday, February 6. The 21-year-old, who is already a four-time Grand Slam champion, took down Andrea Vavassori in a lopsided battle at Rotterdam Ahoy in just 65 minutes, to set up a quarter-final match against fellow Spaniard Pedro Martinez, which will be played later tonight.
After suffering a tough defeat against Serbian Novak Djokovic in four sets in the quarter-final of the Australian Open, number one seed Carlos Alcaraz means business in the ongoing Rotterdam Open. Following a tough three-set match versus Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the round of 32 clash of the tournament, it took him much less time and effort to dispose of Andrea Vavassori.
Carlos Alcaraz set to play against fellow Spaniard Pedro Martinez in quarter-final of Rotterdam Open
The draw in the Rotterdam Open has proven to be quite a tough one for Carlos Alcaraz as he needed to get the better of Botic van de Zandschulp, to whom he had suffered a shock straight sets defeat in the second round of the US Open last year. A highly impressive indoor hard court player from Canada, Felix Auger-Aliassime, was expected to be his opponent in the round of 16 in the Rotterdam Open until the unfortunate injury to the Canadian in the round of 32 match against qualifier Andrea Vavassori.
Holger Rune, the former world number four from Denmark, was slated to be Carlos Alcaraz’s next opponent in the Rotterdam Open until he lost to the Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the previous round of the tournament in straight sets. Regardless, it will take a massive effort from the tennis sensation to win the ATP 500 event with the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev, and Hubert Hurkacz still in the competition.
