The Netherlands stunned West Indies in the group stage game at the CWC 2023 Qualifier as Shai Hope’s side lost in the Super Over. Carlos Brathwaite, the hero of West Indies’ 2016 World Cup triumph, was left heartbroken by his team’s shocking loss to the Netherlands in the Super Over in the World Cup Qualifier 2023.
The West Indies put up 376 runs on the board batting first with Nicholas Pooran scoring a hundred and opener Brandon King supporting him ably with a 76-run knock. The Dutch top four got starts but failed to push on, however, Teja Nidamaru scored a hundred coming in at No.5 and wicketkeeper Scott Edwards also providing necessary runs with the bat with a fifty to propel them closer to the target. Logan Van Beek scored a quick 28 but the game finished with the scores leveled and went into the Super Over.
Van Beek came out into bat and smashed 30 off Jason Holder’s over with three fours and three sixes. West Indies failed to chase and the day’s hero Van Beek successfully defended the target. Carlos Brathwaite, who was commentating during the game was left shell-shocked and saddened as the team fell down from being one of the best in the world to losing against the likes of Zimbabwe and the Netherlands.
To further rub salt to the wound, Brathwaite gave the Man of the Match award to the hero Logan Van Beek. He had a similar glum expression while giving the award, picture of which is also doing rounds on social media.
It is to be noted that Brathwaite had achieved a similar feat to Van Beek in the 2016 final when he hit four consecutive sixes against Ben Stokes in the last over to win the tournament when they needed 19 off the 20th over.
The result left West Indies on the brink of missing out on a place in the 2023 ODI World Cup, as they have four points and are third in Group A and will need to win the remaining game to qualify.
